A day-long workshop and training session on earthquake preparedness, rescue operations and post-disaster response was held in Barishal on Wednesday to strengthen the district’s readiness for potential seismic emergencies.
The programme, organised under the supervision of the Bangladesh Military’s 7 Infantry Division, took place at the Barishal Outer Stadium with participation from members of the district disaster management committee and volunteer groups.
A total of 120 key persons from various institutions received training on formulating action plans, operational strategies and inter-agency coordination for scenarios arising before and after an earthquake.
Certificates were later distributed among field workers, volunteers and students.
Major General M Khair Uddin, Area Commander of the 7 Infantry Division, attended the event and handed over the certificates.
Additionally, 375 field workers, volunteers and students from different organisations and educational institutions are receiving hands-on training from 2–6 December on post-earthquake rescue techniques and first aid.
A combined drill involving all participants will be held on 7 December.
Speaking at the workshop, Major General M Khair Uddin said Barishal frequently faces natural disasters such as floods, tidal surges and cyclones, while the country remains at risk of major earthquakes.
“We must be prepared to tackle any catastrophe collectively. This workshop aims to equip everyone with the knowledge needed to minimise losses and respond effectively,” he said, urging participants to share their learnings widely.
Participants said the Bangladesh Army’s initiative would significantly enhance local disaster preparedness and rapid-response capacity.
The workshop was attended by Barishal Divisional Commissioner Mohammad Mahfuzur Rahman, Range DIG Manzur Morshed Alam, Police Commissioner Shafiqul Islam and other senior officials.
