Unidentified muggers reportedly stabbed a woman and snatched Tk 25,000 and two mobile phones in front of the Election Office in Agargaon, Dhaka, early Friday morning.
The victim, Shilpi Begum, 40, received treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) and was later discharged.
Police and family sources said the incident took place around dawn when she was travelling by rickshaw carrying cash and mobile phones.
Her husband, Abdul Haque, said he was at the National Institute of Neurosciences Hospital with his ailing mother, Mariam Begum, who is undergoing treatment.
Due to a shortage of cash for medical expenses, he asked his wife to bring money from home and come to the hospital.
Accordingly, Shilpi Begum left home in Kafrul’s Ibrahimpur area with Tk25,000 and two mobile phones.
As she reached the road in front of the Agargaon Election Office, a group of 5-6 assailants stopped her rickshaw and attempted to snatch her bag.
When she resisted, the attackers stabbed her in the hands, legs and abdomen with a sharp weapon before fleeing with the bag containing cash and phones.
Despite her injuries, she initially went to the National Institute of Neurosciences Hospital on her own and was later shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for further treatment.
Inspector Md Faruk, in-charge of the DMCH police camp, said the victim was brought to the emergency department early in the morning with stab injuries.
He added that she was treated and later discharged, and confirmed that Tk 25,000 and two mobile phones were snatched in the incident.
