Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI) has recently been awarded ISSCA Global Award 2026 in the ‘Crop Development and Production Technology’ category at Dryland Congress 2026, held in New Delhi, India.

The award was presented in recognition of BARI’s variety BARI Chinabadam-9, a Bangladeshi groundnut variety, said a press release on Tuesday.

The event was organised by the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) and the Centre of Excellence for South-South Cooperation in Agriculture (ISSCA).

BARI Chinabadam-9 was selected from among competitive nominations across the Global South for its role in improving the livelihoods of smallholder farmers. Capable of withstanding adverse environmental conditions, the variety has contributed to boosting agricultural productivity, strengthening food security and enhancing climate resilience for farmers in dryland regions.

ISSCA Global Awards recognise proven agricultural innovations that offer potential for widespread adoption and application in other countries. As a science-based crop development achievement, BARI Chinabadam-9 directly empowers marginalised farming communities facing climate and soil-related challenges.

The recognition highlights Bangladesh’s growing contribution to South-South cooperation and demonstrates how national agricultural research systems can share viable solutions across developing regions, the press release said.

BARI is the country’s largest multi-crop research institution. It conducts research on more than 212 crops, including tuber crops, pulses, oilseeds, vegetables, fruits and spices, and develops high-yielding, climate-resilient crop varieties and sustainable agricultural technologies to ensure national food and nutritional security.
