Rising filmmaker Md Arman Ali has scripted a narrative of resilience, transforming a period of personal setback into a global cinematic triumph.
His independent feature-length documentary, “Shades of Sadness,” is currently drawing significant attention in the international film circuit, having secured selections and accolades at eight prestigious film festivals worldwide.
The documentary has already earned an “Honourable Mention” at the Stockholm City Film Festival and reached the ‘Semi-finalist’ stage at the Sweden Film Awards.
The production has also been nominated and acclaimed at several other notable venues, including the Berlin Indie Film Festival, Rome Prisma Film Awards, Folkestone Film Festival, Peshawar International Film Festival, and the Swedish International Film Festival.
The genesis of “Shades of Sadness” is rooted in a dramatic personal turn for the director.
Following a failed attempt to produce a fiction film last year, Ali struggled with mental distress. He channelled this experience into a creative concept: a video diary documenting the diverse stories of sorrow from people across different age groups and global regions.
Despite the inherent difficulty of persuading individuals to share their personal grief, Ali’s persistent efforts resulted in a multifaceted exploration of human emotion.
Regarding the vision behind the project, director Arman Ali stated to the media, “I wanted to examine whether the emotional experiences of people today will remain the same in the future. This is not merely a film; it is an emotional document of our times.”
The documentary’s production team includes assistant director Masroor Addin, with Shahadat Hossain Nadim providing the background score.
Sumit Ahsan was responsible for the subtitles and poster design, while Maksura Akter and Mosa Al Sharif, among others, contributed to the collection of interviews.
Currently, “Shades of Sadness” is awaiting results from several other major international film festivals.
