Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman on Wednesday said his party no longer wants to engage in divisive politics and is committed to building a forward-looking Bangladesh based on justice and fairness.
Speaking during a public outreach programme in the Dhaka-15 constituency, Shafiqur Rahman expressed his interest in contesting the next parliamentary election from the area and pledged to work towards transforming it into a model constituency if elected by popular mandate.
Addressing residents at North Kafrul High School on Wednesday, he said development would be ensured through peaceful, dignified and respectful political practices.
“If Almighty grants us the opportunity and the people give their mandate, we will work to resolve the problems of this area and build it as an ideal constituency,” he said.
Calling Dhaka-15 close to his heart, the Jamaat leader said he has been trying to understand and internalise the problems faced by local residents, noting that his sense of responsibility has deepened as he plans to contest from the constituency.
Welcoming rival candidates, the Jamaat Ameer urged all contenders to conduct their campaigns in a civilised, peaceful and disciplined manner.
He called for mutual respect among candidates and said the people should be allowed to make their choice freely.
Highlighting local challenges, he said Dhaka-15 suffers from waterlogging, poor road infrastructure, shortages of educational institutions, and the absence of a university, quality hospitals, playgrounds, parks and walkways.
He said a development plan has been prepared to address these issues with the participation of all stakeholders.
Seeking prayers and cooperation from local residents, Shafiqur Rahman said problems can be resolved only through collective efforts.
In a broader national context, he reiterated that Jamaat-e-Islami aims to move beyond past political divisions.
“We do not want to dwell on the past or divide the nation. We want to move forward together and build a modern Bangladesh based on justice and fairness,” he said.
After the programme, the Jamaat Ameer expressed appreciation for the warm reception from students and wished for the continued development of the educational institution.
