FX has officially ordered ‘Very Young Frankenstein’ to series, expanding on the world of Young Frankenstein, the acclaimed comedy created by Mel Brooks and Gene Wilder.
The project was initially announced with a pilot order in 2025. While full plot details remain undisclosed, the series is described as being inspired by the classic 1974 film.
The cast includes Zach Galifianakis, Dolly Wells and Spencer House in leading roles. Nikki Crawford, Kumail Nanjiani and Cary Elwes also appeared in the pilot episode.
The series comes from writer Stefani Robinson, who executive produces alongside Taika Waititi and Garrett Basch. All three previously worked on the FX comedy What We Do in the Shadows. Waititi also directed the pilot.
Brooks, who co-wrote and directed the original film, will executive produce the series alongside Kevin Salter and Michael Gruskoff, the producer of the original movie. The project is being produced by 20th Television.
Nick Grad, President of FX Entertainment, said the new series combines elements of the original film with the network’s established comedic style.
“‘Very Young Frankenstein’ blends inspiration from the fan-favourite movie with the inventive, irreverent spirit that has defined FX comedies over the years, making this a completely original take on the classic story,” Grad said.
Released in 1974, Young Frankenstein became both a critical and commercial success and is widely regarded as one of the most celebrated American comedy films.
The original film starred Gene Wilder as Dr Frederick Frankenstein, the grandson of Victor Frankenstein, who travels to Transylvania after inheriting his family estate and becomes drawn into continuing his grandfather’s experiments.
The cast also featured Cloris Leachman, Marty Feldman, Teri Garr, Madeline Kahn, Peter Boyle and Kenneth Mars, with a brief appearance from Gene Hackman.
