Vegetable prices have risen once again in the markets of Jhalokathi. Due to continuous rainfall and a supply shortage, the prices of almost all types of vegetables have increased within the span of a week.
The price per kilogram of vegetables has risen by at least Tk20 to Tk30.
Market observations on Sunday revealed that wax gourd (jhali kumra) is being sold at Tk40 per kg, cucumber at Tk120, pointed gourd (potol) at Tk60, brinjal at Tk100, bitter gourd at Tk90 to Tk100, carrot at Tk80, tomato at Tk70, sweet pumpkin at Tk50, and okra at Tk50, green chillies at Tk120. Other vegetables in the market have also seen price hikes ranging from Tk20 to Tk30.
Sellers said vegetable production has been severely hampered by excessive rainfall. They further claimed that an increase in transportation costs has forced them to sell vegetables at higher prices.
Conversely, the buyers expressed that they are struggling to afford these daily essentials following the sudden price surge.
Many consumers are now purchasing smaller quantities of vegetables than they did previously. Under these circumstances, stakeholders have demanded that the administration increase its monitoring to bring the market under control.
