A local Union Parishad (UP) member was beaten to death by a mob early Monday morning in the Baliapara area of Araihazar upazila, Narayanganj, on allegations of collecting extortion money.
The victim, ward member of Brahmandi Union ward No. 3, was reportedly involved in 13 criminal cases, including murder.
According to police, Sohel faced 13 criminal cases, including murder, and was politically affiliated with the Awami League.
On Monday morning, Sohel and three associates were allegedly collecting extortion money from a house of a person named Sharif in his administrative area in Baliapara village of Araihazar upazila.
The news quickly spread, prompting angry residents to chase the group. While Sohel’s associates managed to escape, the mob caught Sohel, tied his hands and feet with a rope, and severely beat him, leading to his death.
Police arrived soon after and brought the situation under control.
Araihazar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Khondkar Nasir Uddin confirmed Sohel’s political connections and his involvement in multiple criminal cases, including murder, extortion, and robbery.
Sohel’s body has been sent to Narayanganj General Hospital morgue for autopsy. Authorities said further details will be released following investigation.
