The dengue situation in Bangladesh continues to deteriorate, with two more deaths from the fever recorded in the last 24 hours. During this same period, another 723 patients were hospitalised across the country.
According to a press release issued by the Health Emergency Operation Centre and Control Room of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), the fresh hospitalisations include 112 patients in Dhaka South City Corporation, 101 in Dhaka North City Corporation, 107 in Dhaka Division (excluding the city corporations).
In Barishal Division, 101 patients have been hospitalised, with one death recorded; Khulna reported 98 patients, with one death, followed by 83 in Chattogram, 63 in Rajshahi, 45 in Mymensingh, 12 in Rangpur and one in Sylhet.
The DGHS press release further revealed that from 1 January of this year to date, a total of 21,550 people have been admitted to hospitals nationwide with dengue. Among them, 19,894 patients have recovered and been discharged, whilst the total death toll has reached 63.
Currently, 1,593 dengue patients are undergoing treatment at hospitals across the country, with 340 of those in Dhaka metropolitan area alone.
An analysis of the data reveals that although males represent 66.4 per cent of those infected compared to 33.6 per cent for females, the mortality rate is significantly higher among females, who account for 61.9 per cent of the total deaths.
In terms of age demographics, individuals aged between 26 and 30 years comprise the most affected group.
