A mason and a day labourer died after falling ill while entering a septic tank at a building under construction in Faridpur Sadar Upazila.
The deceased were identified as mason Md Shaon Hossain, 25, a resident of Madhukhali Upazila, and day labourer Hridoy Sheikh, 21, from Char Mongalkot village under Kaijuri Union in Faridpur Sadar.
The incident occurred on Wednesday morning in the Bakhunda area under Faridpur Kotwali Police Station. Shaon died around 1pm on Wednesday while undergoing treatment, while Hridoy died at around 1:30am on Thursday.
According to police and local residents, Shaon entered the newly built septic tank of a building owned by Md Kawsar Mia around 9am on Wednesday to remove bamboo supports from the tank’s roof.
After a while, he became unconscious inside the tank. Hridoy then entered the septic tank to rescue him but also fell ill.
Local residents rescued both men and took them to Faridpur Medical College Hospital, where they were admitted for treatment. Shaon died in afternoon, followed by Hridoy later that night.
Confirming the incident, Faridpur Kotwali Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mahmudul Hasan said they initially suspected that the two men died after inhaling toxic gas accumulated inside the septic tank.
He said the bodies were handed over to their families without post-mortems following requests from the relatives. Separate unnatural death cases have been filed over the incident, he added.
