Police have detained two people in connection with the killing of Md Billal Hossain Talukdar, a Swechchhasebak Dal leader in Moghbazar, Dhaka.
The arrests were made from Munshiganj and the capital.
The detainees are Riazul Islam and Al Amin Mahin. Ramna Thana police detained them, confirmed Deputy Commissioner (Media) NM Nasiruddin at a press briefing at the DMP Media Centre on Tuesday morning.
Police said preliminary investigation suggests the killing took place following an altercation between local Jubo Dal leader Didarul Islam Babu and his associates. Police said the political identity of the two detainees will not be prioritised in the investigation.
DC NM Nasiruddin said efforts are ongoing to arrest others involved in the incident.
Ramna Zone Deputy Commissioner Sheikh Zahidul Islam said a murder case was filed with Ramna Police Station by the victim’s family.
He confirmed that two people have already been arrested. Al Amin is the joint convener of Ward 19 Jubo Dal, while Riazul is a Jubo Dal activist from the same ward.
The incident took place on Monday night at around 8pm in front of Anarkali Super Market parking area beside Siddheswari Boys School under Ramna Police Station.
Police said attackers ambushed Billal Hossain Talukdar and stabbed him repeatedly in the dark before fleeing the scene. He was rescued in critical condition but later died.
57-year-old Billal Hossain Talukderwas a former convener of Ramna Thana Swechchhasebak Dal. He was also a cement and sand businessman. He lived with his family in Moghbazar.
Police said no case had been formally filed at the time of initial reporting, but family members confirmed that preparations for filing a murder case were underway and it would be lodged at Ramna Police Station within the day.
Investigators said they are looking into whether the killing was linked to political rivalry or business conflict. The exact motive will be confirmed after further interrogation.
