A local leader of the Swecchasebak Dal was stabbed to death during an arbitration meeting in the capital’s Mouchak area on Monday night.
The deceased, 57-year-old Md Billal Hossain Talukder, was the former convener of the Ramna unit of Swecchasebak Dal and a member of the Dhaka South city unit.
The incident occurred around 8:00 pm in front of Anarkali Market. Billal was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) in a critical condition, where attending doctors declared him dead at approximately 9:15pm.
According to the victim’s nephew, Md Mobarak Hossain Akash, the conflict began earlier in the evening when he was assaulted by a group in front of the market. Following the assault, Akash called his uncle, Billal Hossain Talukder, to the location.
Witnesses reported that during an arbitration meeting (salish) held at 8pm to resolve the earlier altercation, an argument broke out between Billal and Didarul Islam Babu, the convener of the Ramna unit Juba Dal, and Lutfor, the unit’s secretary.
At one point, followers led by Babu stabbed Billal in the chest, causing him to collapse immediately.
Billal, a resident of Hatirjheel Baganbari, also operated a cement business in the Malibagh area.
Inspector Md Faruk, in-charge of the DMCH police camp, confirmed the death, adding that the body has been placed in the morgue. The Ramna Police Station has been officially informed of the incident.
