Police recovered the body of a 21-year-old woman from a locked flat in the Chhayabithi area of Savar municipality on Monday morning, allegedly murdered by her husband only a day after he secured a leadership position in the Chhatra Dal.
The deceased was identified as Riya Moni. Her husband, Rony Islam, a tiles contractor by profession, was appointed as the assistant general secretary of the newly formed Savar Municipal Chhatra Dal committee on 7 June.
According to local sources, the couple had been residing in a second-floor flat for approximately six months. It is alleged that Rony murdered his wife on Monday morning, 8 June, locked the premises from the outside, and fled the scene.
Before absconding, the accused reportedly telephoned his family members, instructing them to inform the police of the incident. Following the report from the family, a team from Savar Model Police Station reached the location and recovered the body at approximately 11am after breaking the door lock.
Sub-Inspector (SI) Ramzan Ali of Savar Model Police Station confirmed that the body was found inside the locked room. “The death is primarily being treated as a murder. However, the exact cause will be confirmed once the autopsy report is received,” he stated.
The body has been sent to the Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital morgue in Dhaka for a post-mortem examination. Police confirmed that Rony Islam remains at large, and active efforts are underway to apprehend him as the filing of a case is currently in progress.
