Two Bangladeshi youths were shot dead allegedly by members of India’s Khasia community near the Companyganj border in Sylhet on Friday.
The victims have been identified as Ashiqur, 19, son of Buran Uddin, and22, son of the late Azman Ali, residents of Pram Sidhpur village in Damdama.
According to Bangladesh Border Guard (BGB) and police sources, Ashiqur was shot while near a betel nut plantation about 600 yards inside Indian territory near Dumdama border area of North Ranikhai Union, when he was shot by Khasia around 12 noon.
He died instantly, later his companions later recovered the body and brought it back across the border.
In a separate incident nearby, Moshaid was shot and severely injured. He was taken to Bangladesh territory by his companions but later died while receiving treatment at Companyganj Upazila Health Complex.
Lt Col Nazmul Islam, commanding officer of BGB battalion-48 in Sylhet, said the shootings occurred about 1.5 kilometers inside Indian territory when members of Khasia community opened fire during an alleged betel nut theft.
Companyganj Police Officer-in-Charge Shafiqul Islam confirmed that one youth died at the scene inside India while the other succumbed to injuries in Companyganj Upazila Health Complex.
Both bodies have been sent to Osmani Medical College Hospital for autopsy.
