A rare pink buffalo nicknamed “Donald Trump” has been moved under armed escort to Bangladesh’s national zoo after the unusual animal triggered a wave of public fascination ahead of Eid-ul-Azha.
The albino buffalo, known for its pale pink skin and striking appearance, was transferred to the Bangladesh National Zoo in Dhaka’s Mirpur area under government supervision after officials declared it a rare genetic specimen requiring conservation.
Authorities said the animal would now remain on public display at the zoo under round-the-clock veterinary monitoring.
State Minister for Livestock Sultan Salauddin Tuku confirmed the development to TIMES of Bangladesh. He said only one in about 10,000 buffaloes may be born with such characteristics, making the animal important for both research and biodiversity conservation.
Zoo authorities have already prepared a dedicated enclosure for the buffalo.
Bangladesh National Zoo Director Mohammad Rafiqul Islam Talukdar said the animal would remain accessible to visitors during zoo hours.
“This is an extremely rare species,” Keraniganj Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Ruhul Quddus told TIMES, adding that the buffalo had been brought back from its owner’s residence and handed over to the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock.
Experts say the buffalo’s pink colour comes from albinism, a condition caused by a lack of melanin.
Sultan Salauddin further confirmed that, the buffalo’s original owner, Moniruzzaman, was compensated by the government and provided with another cow for Eid sacrifice so that he would not suffer financial loss.
