Transport workers across the country have decided to operate all vehicles on Monday, ignoring the “shutdown” call issued by the deposed Awami League and its affiliated organisations.
The workers also warned that any damage to vehicles or cargo during this period would be claimed from the government as compensation.
In a press release on Sunday, Humayun Kabir Khan, acting general secretary of the Bangladesh Road Transport Workers Federation, said the federation had rejected the “shutdown” programme.
He added, “The Awami League (whose activities are banned) leaders announced this programme on November 16 and 17 to disrupt the court verdict against ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina, who is accused in a crimes against humanity case.”
“We will keep public transport running normally throughout the country,” he said.
He further mentioned that the federation has been cooperating with the interim government in various ways. “The people of the country have already rejected the Awami League’s programme,” he added.
Abdur Rahim, acting president, along with Joint General Secretary Abbas Uddin and Organising Secretary Haji Kashem, were present at the press conference.
