A joint task force seized 1.5 million metres of banned current nets and 100 China duari nets during a raid on a warehouse in Puran Bazar, Chandpur city.
The operation, launched based on a tip-off, was conducted between 4pm and 8pm on Tuesday by Sadar Upazila Administration, Coast Guard, and Upazila Fisheries Office.
Sadar upazila Senior Fisheries Officer Mirza Omar Faruq confirmed the details of the seizure on Wednesday afternoon.
During the drive, a mobile court led by Sadar upazila Assistant Commissioner (Land) and Executive Magistrate Bappi Dutta Rony fined an individual in charge of the warehouse Tk3,000.
According to Fisheries officer, the estimated market value of the seized illegal nets is around Tk5 crore. Following the operation, the nets were transported to Coast Guard Chandpur station, where they were destroyed by fire on Tuesday night.
Other officials from Department of Fisheries and patrol members of Coast Guard Chandpur station were also present during the operation.
