As the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) election draws nearer, tensions and controversy continue to escalate. On Tuesday night, speculation was rife that 15 clubs might boycott the election. By Wednesday afternoon, that speculation had turned into reality.
Former national captain Tamim Iqbal, considered one of the heavyweight candidates, appeared at the BCB headquarters in Mirpur and officially announced his withdrawal from the upcoming election. Alongside him, 14 other candidates also stepped away from the race.
Tamim did not immediately clarify his reasons for withdrawing. However, a short time later, Israfil Khasru, who had withdrawn his candidacy for a director position from Exium Cricketers, spoke to the media and shed some light on the matter.
“A certain faction within the government is blatantly interfering in the process,” Khasru claimed. “That is all I can say for now. We will explain our full position soon through a press conference.”
Commenting further on the withdrawal, Khasru added, “There is no proper environment for a fair election. It is deeply unfortunate that such a situation has been created for the BCB election. The entire process has lacked transparency. Councillors from different districts and divisions were contacted and influenced over the phone. We have seen several examples of this. And with the treatment of the 15 clubs, there has been clear arbitrariness. This is not the kind of election we expect to see in a new Bangladesh. This election is being manufactured, and that is unacceptable. From a moral standpoint, we have taken this decision.”
Earlier, there had been discussions within sporting circles about the children of BNP leaders expressing support for Tamim Iqbal’s candidacy. Later, it emerged that negotiations were taking place with the government. Without an agreement, a large group was expected to withdraw. On this matter, Israfil Khasru, son of BNP leader Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, said, “Negotiation happens on the basis of fairness, logic and equality. When there is no level playing field, the issue of negotiation does not even arise. The entire process has been influenced.”
Wednesday at noon marked the deadline for candidates to withdraw their nominations for the director positions. The final list of candidates is scheduled to be published at 2 pm. Tamim arrived at the BCB office around 10 am, and strong rumours suggested he was there to formally withdraw. By midday, the speculation had proven true.
In addition to Tamim Iqbal, other heavyweight candidates such as Saeed Ibrahim Ahmed, Israfil Khasru, Syed Borhanul Islam and Rafiqul Islam Babu also pulled out of the election for director positions.
