Jahangirnagar University Fazilatunnesa hall leaders have been accused of ragging a second-year Fine Arts student.
Pranto Ray (2023–24 session, 53rd batch) lodged the complaint against Fajilatunnesa Hall parliament leaders Aishi Sarker Athi (49th batch) and Proma Raha (50th batch), reports UNB.
Athi, the vice president and Raha, the assistant general secretary subjected Pranto to humiliation during the final exam on 27 August.
According to the written complaint submitted to the proctor’s office, Pranto said that two other students, Noman and Arian (51st batch), forcibly escorted him and several classmates to the gallery.
Senior students allegedly mocked him and disrupted the exam environment.
He further claimed that Sijan (51st batch) kicked and threatened him with expulsion from the department.
“We come to the university to study. Such ragging damages our dignity, safety and mental health. Strict action is necessary, along with effective anti-ragging measures to ensure students’ security,” Pranto told UNB.
Both Athi and Raha, however, denied the allegations.
Athi said the complaint “misrepresents” her words and insisted it was not ragging or bullying.
“Nearly 50 students were present, but only a few of us were named,” she said.
Raha, meanwhile, expressed regret over the incident, stating, “Some of the issues were later discussed with Pranto, but my name was still included in the complaint. I hope for a fair judgment.”
Professor Shamim Reza, Fine Arts Department Chair, said to resolve the issue internally, but the matter was later brought before the proctor.
Confirming receipt of the complaint, Proctor Professor AKM Rashidul Alam said, “Ragging is not tolerated at Jahangirnagar University. Such incidents have been rare in recent years. The university has clear anti-ragging policies, and action will follow investigation.”
