Shwe Kyo Ching Marma, joint convener of the National Citizen Party (NCP) Bandarban district committee, who is currently in prison following his arrest on charges of raping a Marma woman at his resort, has been temporarily suspended from the organisation.

The decision was announced in a letter issued late on Saturday night, signed by Sadia Farjana Diba on behalf of the NCP central office. The letter stated that the action against Shwe Kyo Ching Marma was taken on the directives of NCP Central President Nahid Islam and General Secretary Akhtar Hossain.

In addition, a show-cause notice has been issued to the accused, giving him two working days from the receipt of the notice to explain why he should not be permanently expelled from the NCP on charges of severe breach of organisational discipline and involvement in unethical activities.

Shwe Kyo Ching Marma was arrested on Friday night by Bandarban Sadar Police Station on charges of raping a Marma woman at his resort under the pretext of a promise of marriage. A case was filed under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act, with the victim herself as the plaintiff.

Bandarban Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Masud Parvez said that when the accused was brought before the Chief Judicial Magistrate Court on Saturday afternoon, the court ordered him sent to prison.
