Artificial intelligence has quickly become one of the most debated technologies of our time. For some, it promises efficiency, creativity and unprecedented productivity. For others, it raises deeper concerns about job losses, the erosion of human creativity and the ethics of machines making decisions once reserved for people.
Beyond these debates lies a quieter but far more dangerous consequence of AI’s rapid rise: its growing role in spreading misleading and false content.
AI did not enter our lives gradually. Its development accelerated almost overnight, and tools that once required specialist knowledge are now available to anyone with an internet connection. Platforms such as Midjourney, Sora and various voice-cloning tools can generate realistic images, videos and audio clips within minutes. What once took teams of professionals can now be done by a single user behind a screen.
While these developments have fuelled creativity, they have also made deception easier than ever. Fake images, fabricated videos and cloned voices can be shared instantly, often without context and presented as fact. In moments of political tension or breaking news, such content can spread faster than the truth itself.
Social media has become the primary vehicle for AI-driven misinformation. During major global events, timelines are flooded with visuals that appear authentic at first glance but are entirely fabricated or taken out of context. The recent situation in Venezuela is a striking example.
Following the US military operation that removed President Nicolás Maduro, AI-generated videos claiming to show Venezuelan citizens celebrating went viral across TikTok, Instagram and X.
These clips, which amassed millions of views, depicted emotional crowds thanking the United States and its leadership. Many users accepted them as genuine before community fact-checking tools flagged them as AI-generated. By then, the damage had already been done. The videos had been reshared tens of thousands of times, even by high-profile figures, illustrating how easily false narratives can be legitimised through visibility alone.
This pattern is not new. Similar misinformation has circulated during the Israel-Palestine conflict and the Russia-Ukraine war. However, AI has significantly amplified both the scale and speed of its spread.
Misleading AI content does more than confuse; it can actively create unrest. When people believe they are witnessing real events, emotions run high. Anger, fear and false hope can spread rapidly, particularly in politically sensitive environments. AI-generated footage of protests, arrests or celebrations can inflame tensions, provoke hostility and deepen divisions before authorities or journalists have time to respond.
The problem is compounded by the fact that many users scroll quickly, consuming information visually rather than critically. A convincing image or video often feels more trustworthy than a written correction that appears later.
Politics has become one of the most vulnerable arenas for AI misuse. Fabricated visuals of political leaders, fake speeches generated through voice cloning and manipulated footage can influence public opinion in subtle but powerful ways. In the Venezuelan case, AI-generated images of Maduro in US custody circulated even before any official confirmation, shaping perceptions before facts emerged.
Globally, such content risks undermining democratic processes. Elections, protests and international conflicts can all be influenced by visuals designed to push specific narratives, eroding trust not only in institutions but also in genuine journalism.
The impact of misleading AI content extends beyond political unrest. Fake emergency footage, altered crime videos or fabricated health claims can pose serious risks to public safety. When people can no longer easily distinguish between real and fake content, panic and misinformation thrive. Over time, this erosion of trust can make audiences sceptical even of authentic evidence, a phenomenon often described as “reality fatigue”.
Addressing AI misinformation requires collective responsibility. Governments are beginning to respond, with countries such as India proposing strict labelling laws and Spain introducing heavy fines for unlabeled AI-generated content. Social media platforms have also rolled out detection and labelling tools, though these measures remain inconsistent.
For users, digital literacy is crucial. Questioning sources, checking multiple outlets and being cautious before sharing emotionally charged content can significantly reduce the spread of misinformation. Experts increasingly argue that watermarking or “fingerprinting” real media may become more effective than chasing fake content after it goes viral.
AI is not inherently harmful. Like any powerful tool, its impact depends on how it is used and regulated. As artificial intelligence continues to evolve, so must our awareness, policies and sense of responsibility. The challenge is not to fear AI but to ensure that innovation does not come at the cost of truth.
In an age where seeing is no longer believing, the most important skill may simply be learning to pause, question and think before we click “share.”
