The Advisory Council has given final approval to the draft “Bangladesh Telecommunication (Amendment) Ordinance, 2025” to further strengthen and make the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) more accountable.
Through this new law, it has been ensured that in any future situation in Bangladesh, internet service will not be shut down even for a minute.
This information was shared by the Press Secretary to the Chief Adviser, Shafiqul Alam, during a press briefing at the Foreign Service Academy auditorium in the capital on Wednesday afternoon.
He said that the ordinance has been formulated by modernising and updating the previous law. It places special emphasis on protecting customer data privacy, ensuring service quality, and preventing the growing online fraud and deception.
Highlighting the notable aspects of the ordinance, the Press Secretary informed that a “Transparency and Accountability Committee” has been proposed to ensure the transparency of BTRC.
Additionally, provisions have been made to establish a technical platform named “Center for Information Support” (CIS) for national security and digital infrastructure protection, and a special council headed by the law adviser. This council will oversee approvals and activities related to lawful interception for the interests of state security and public order. He noted that the law is aligned with the standards of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).
Regarding the recent attacks on The Daily Star and Prothom Alo offices, Shafiqul Alam warned that those involved will face severe punishment. He informed that cases have been filed under the Penal Code and relevant laws, and action is being taken against the perpetrators.
Simultaneously, he stated that the government is giving the highest priority to the investigation of Osman Hadi’s murder. The press secretary said, “Police and all security agencies are working on it. Some important leads have already been found. Several individuals have been arrested in addition to the main suspect.” The law ministry has stated that the trial of this case will be completed in the Speedy Trial Tribunal.
In response to a question regarding the security of Tarique Rahman and the Awami League’s participation in the election, Shafiqul Alam said regarding the return of BNP’s acting chairman Tarique Rahman that the government welcomes his return. Discussions are ongoing with BNP regarding his necessary security, and the government is providing all kinds of cooperation.
On the other hand, the Press Secretary made it clear that the Awami League, whose political activities are banned, will not be able to participate in the upcoming 13th National Parliamentary Election. While not directly commenting on the letter from the five US lawmakers, he clearly stated the government’s position, saying, “The activities of the Awami League are banned, and the Election Commission has removed them from the list as a party. Therefore, there is no opportunity for the Awami League to participate in this election.”
