Chinese Ambassador Yao Wen expressed optimism on Sunday that work on the Teesta River Comprehensive Management and Restoration Project is expected to start soon, following extensive discussions between Dhaka and Beijing.
The ambassador shared these insights with reporters after a meeting with Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman on Sunday, where he also praised the recent general election as a “victory of democracy” that was conducted in an orderly fashion.
He noted that both countries intend to maintain a high frequency of diplomatic visits.
The remarks coincide with a congratulatory note sent on 17 February 2026 by Li Qiang, premier of the State Council of China, to Prime Minister Tarique Rahman following his inauguration.
Premier Li described the two nations as neighbours sharing a long-standing friendship and a Comprehensive Strategic Cooperative Partnership.
Over the 51 years since establishing formal ties, China and Bangladesh have built a relationship based on mutual respect and equality, according to the Premier. He stated that the Chinese government supports the new administration’s efforts toward smooth governance.
Premier Li also conveyed his readiness to work alongside Prime Minister Tarique Rahman to deepen bilateral ties.
This includes advancing high-quality Belt and Road cooperation and expanding exchanges across all sectors to bring the partnership to a new level for the benefit of both populations.
