In Chattogram’s Mirsharai, a 16-year-old female madrasa student and an unidentified male were killed after a truck crashed into the back of a stationary CNG-run autorickshaw.
The accident occurred on Wednesday morning in front of Zahediya Madrasa at the Bortakia Bazar on the Dhaka-Chattogram highway.
Four others were injured in the incident, accident-causing severe traffic congestion on the Chattogram-bound lane.
The 16-year-old madrasa student, Khadija Akhtar (16), was the eldest daughter of Nasir, a homeopathic doctor at Bortakia Bazar. She was a 10th-grade student at the local Zahediya Dakhil Madrasa.
The other deceased is said to be a male, whose identity has not yet been confirmed, and whose body is currently in the custody of Zorargonj Highway Police Station.
The body of Khadija Akhtar has been handed over to her family.
Among the injured are Umme Habiba and Tawfiya Tabassum, younger sisters of the deceased Khadija Akhtar. The identities of the other two persons injured in the accident also could not be confirmed.
Eyewitnesses said that in the morning, a truck lost control and crashed into the back of an autorickshaw that was standing at Bortakia Bazar on the highway. Due to the impact, the autorickshaw fell into an adjacent pond. Two people were killed and three were injured. The three critically injured were admitted to Chattogram Medical College Hospital.
Immediately after the accident, rescue workers from the Mirsarai Fire Station and members of the Zorargonj Highway Police reached the spot and rescued the injured and recovered the bodies of the deceased.
Assistant Police Superintendent of Chattogram District Police (Mirsarai Circle), Nadim Haider, said, “While on my way to Chattogram, I noticed the accident after getting down due to traffic congestion in the Bortakia area. Contact has been made with the Fire Service and the police station. Three people have been sent to the hospital in critical condition. The situation is under control.”
