The Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) is set to commence the sale of essential commodities through mobile trucks across the country starting on Monday to ensure market stability ahead of Eid-ul-Azha.
According to a ministry press release issued on Sunday, the initiative will run for 10 consecutive days until 21 May, excluding Fridays.
This year, TCB will sell products in the open market through 720 mobile trucks nationwide, benefiting both the public and family cardholders.
In an order signed by TCB Deputy Director (Commercial) Md Shahadat Hossain, who said the primary objective of this initiative is to alleviate market pressure surrounding the upcoming Eid festival and to make daily essentials more accessible to the common people at fair prices.
Commerce Minister Khandaker Abdul Muktadir is scheduled to formally inaugurate the programme in the Agargaon area of the capital.
As per TCB’s plan, each mobile truck is expected to serve an average of 400 consumers daily, with an estimated 2.88 million beneficiaries during the campaign period.
A total of 13,939 tonnes of commodities will be sold during these 10 days.
The distribution of trucks is as follows: 50 trucks daily in Dhaka metropolitan and district, 20 trucks in Chattogram metropolitan and district, 15 trucks in each six other divisional cities and 10 trucks each in 56 districts.
TCB will focus on the sale of three essential items at subsidised rates: edible oil at Tk130 per 2-litre packs, sugar at Tk80 per 1-kg packs, lentils at Tk70 per 2-kg packs.
The government has confirmed that the existing programme of selling products at subsidised rates to low-income family cardholders will continue alongside this mobile truck initiative. This ensures that both the public and registered cardholders can benefit from the fair-price sales simultaneously.
