Taylor Swift is facing legal action over the title of her latest album, ‘The Life of a Showgirl’, after a writer accused the pop star of trademark infringement.
The lawsuit, filed in a California federal court by performer and writer Maren Wade, alleges that Swift and UMG Recordings used a name that closely resembles her long-established brand. Wade has brought claims of trademark infringement, false designation and unfair competition and is seeking damages along with an order to prevent further use of the title.
Wade began building her brand in 2014 through a column titled ‘Confessions of a Showgirl’, which later expanded into a podcast and live performance series. Her trademark covers a range of entertainment services, including stage and television productions.
According to the complaint, Swift’s album title is confusingly similar and targets a comparable audience. It also notes that the US Patent and Trademark Office previously declined Swift’s application to register the title, citing similarities between the two names and their use in related entertainment fields.
Wade claims the overlap has led to confusion, with some audiences believing she has copied Swift’s branding, potentially damaging her business. Swift has not publicly responded to the allegations.
