The return of BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman to Bangladesh is expected to have a positive impact on the country’s political landscape and help smooth the ongoing democratic transition, said Shafiqul Alam, press secretary to the chief adviser.

He made the remarks on Thursday while visiting the Holy Rosary Queen Church in Tejgaon, where he exchanged Christmas greetings with members of the Christian community.

“There is a political vacuum in the country, and that vacuum will be filled with the arrival of Tarique Rahman. As the leader of the country’s largest political party, his return is highly significant for stabilizing the political scenario,” he said.

Responding to questions about security arrangements, Shafiqul Alam said the BNP would take full responsibility for Tarique Rahman’s protection and had already sought necessary cooperation from the government.

“We want his return to take place in a peaceful and orderly manner,” he added.
