BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman has urged all to work together to restore democracy in Bangladesh, emphasising that in a democratic system men, women, and people of all genders must enjoy equal opportunities and dignity.
Marking International Day of Democracy on Monday, Tarique wrote on his verified Facebook page that the day, observed annually since 2007, seeks to raise global awareness about democracy’s essence and strength. He noted that the United Nations recognises it as an occasion to promote democratic practices across the world.
Paying tribute to those who sacrificed for democracy worldwide, he said late president Ziaur Rahman had restored multi-party democracy in Bangladesh, freeing the nation from the grip of one-party rule. “True democracy is built on human dignity, freedom of expression, social justice, and equality,” he wrote.
He also referred to BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia’s role in advancing that vision, saying she endured brutal attacks from authoritarian forces. Tarique alleged that since independence, Bangladesh has repeatedly faced authoritarian intrusions through party and media bans, suppression of free expression, manipulated elections, and the weakening of institutions. “Over the past decade and a half, with the rise of Awami fascism, democracy was imprisoned and the nation kept under strict control,” he wrote.
Highlighting this year’s theme “Achieving Gender Equality: Action by Action,” he said democracy guarantees equal opportunities and respect for all individuals, regardless of gender, which he described as a fundamental right.
He added that democracy rests on people’s free expression of political, economic, social, and cultural choices, and their full participation in all aspects of life. “Now we must work together to restore democracy through free and fair elections, an independent judiciary and media, and institutions that uphold democratic principles,” Tarique said.
“Insha’Allah, we will build a Bangladesh of prosperity, self-reliance, inclusivity, and justice,” he concluded.
