Syed Abdullah Mohammed Taher, deputy leader of the opposition in parliament and nayeb-e-ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami, has condemned the alleged harassment of former chief adviser Muhammad Yunus at John F Kennedy International Airport in New York, United States.
In a statement, Taher said some individuals allegedly linked to what he described as “Awami League fascists” had verbally harassed Nobel laureate Yunus at the airport, using offensive language. He described the incident as unacceptable and strongly condemned the behaviour.
Taher said such conduct towards prominent Bangladeshis on foreign soil was inappropriate and should not be tolerated, as it could undermine the country’s image and dignity before the international community.
He urged everyone to refrain from such behaviour.
The Jamaat leader further alleged that the Awami League men who had been ousted from power in Bangladesh were continuing to conspire against the country and its people from abroad.
He also accused them of posing a threat to the security of Bangladeshi expatriates and patriotic citizens travelling overseas.
Expressing confidence that peace-loving Bangladeshis at home and abroad would resist such alleged activities, Taher called on officials at Bangladesh’s embassies and high commissions abroad to take responsible and courageous steps to address the issue.
