Sarah Cooke, British high commissioner to Bangladesh, believes that Sylhet represents the most visible and personal dimension of UK–Bangladesh relations.
She said, “British citizens of Sylhet origin have built a strong bridge between the two countries, making bilateral ties deeper and more multifaceted.”
She made the remarks on Wednesday evening at an iftar reception hosted by the UK High Commission at a hotel near Sylhet airport.
According to Sarah Cooke, the UK is one of the largest investors in Bangladesh, and economic, trade, and development cooperation between the two nations continues to expand. She expressed interest in working closely with the new government to further strengthen this partnership.
The high commissioner said, “For generations, the Sylheti community has played a vital role in shaping modern Britain. Their contributions in business, culture, public service, and social life are deeply valued in the UK.”
Extending Ramadan greetings to all present, she said, “This holy month teaches us compassion, solidarity, and shared humanity.”
She also expressed hope that the long-standing friendship and mutual trust between Bangladesh and the UK will make their relationship even stronger in the future.
The iftar was attended by government officials, political leaders, lawyers, journalists, and other distinguished guests from various walks of life.
