Switzerland and Canada went into the break at 0-0 in their World Cup Group clash after a scrappy first half produced little quality in front of goal. Both sides arrived with a place in the round of 32 almost secure, but top spot remained on the line.
Neither side controlled the game for long stretches. The ball moved quickly from end to end, yet attacks often broke down before reaching dangerous areas. Switzerland looked slightly sharper around the box, while Canada carried threat on the counter but lacked a clean final action.
The biggest chance fell to Switzerland in the 12th minute. Breel Embolo found space and drove his effort towards goal, but Maxime Crepeau reacted sharply and made a strong save. Manzambi attacked the loose ball but defenders blocked his effort before Canada cleared.
Switzerland tried to move through Embolo and use runners around him. Embolo released Manzambi again minutes later with a smart pass, but Canada defended aggressively and stopped the move before it developed.
Canada slowly settled after a difficult opening spell. Cyle Larin found space on the edge of the area but failed to trouble Gregor Kobel with a tame effort. Ahmed later found a clearer opening after Canada switched play from right to left, though he could not generate enough power to test the goalkeeper.
The half also produced a strange moment involving Granit Xhaka and Larin. Both players entered the referee’s book after a needless clash during an attempt to clear the ball.
Switzerland still looked the more threatening side, but Crepeau’s early stop from Embolo remained the clearest chance before the interval.
