Switzerland beat co-hosts Canada 2-1 and claimed top spot in World Cup Group B after a sharp second-half spell changed a game that had drifted through a goalless opening period.
Both teams entered the match in a strong position for qualification, but first place carried a better route through the knockout rounds. Switzerland found the edge after the break through Ruben Vargas and Johan Manzambi, while Canada’s late response through substitute Promise David came too late.
The first half lacked rhythm and clear openings. Switzerland produced the best chance when Breel Embolo broke through, but Maxime Crepeau reacted quickly and pushed away the effort. Johan Manzambi chased the rebound but Canada blocked the second attempt.
Canada saw more of the ball in spells but struggled to create clean shooting positions. Cyle Larin cut inside from the edge of the area but sent an effort straight at Gregor Kobel. Ali Ahmed also found space but failed to generate enough power to trouble the Swiss goalkeeper.
Switzerland changed the pace immediately after the restart. Manzambi burst down the right and his delivery caused problems inside the box. A slight touch on the cross dragged Canada’s back line out of shape and left Vargas free at the far post to fire into the bottom corner.
Canada never recovered from that setback. Switzerland moved the ball with greater speed and looked more organised when possession changed hands. Manzambi then added a second after Crepeau failed to deal properly with a long-range effort.
Promise David pulled one back within moments of coming on. The move carried real quality as Canada linked quickly through midfield before David finished first time. The goal raised Canada’s energy levels and forced Switzerland back towards their own box.
Canada pushed during added time and Alistair Johnston had a late chance with a header, but Kobel gathered safely. Switzerland held firm and secured first place, while Canada now head into a tougher round of 32 path.
