Police have arrested a young man in connection with an attack on a police constable following a motorcycle search in Haluaghat upazila of Mymensingh.
The accused, identified as Liyon, 28, is the son of Ruhul Amin, the upazila convener of Swechchhasebak Dal. He allegedly attacked Constable Izaul Haque Bhuiya with a sharp weapon, leaving the officer seriously injured.
The incident took place around 3:30am on Thursday in the Paglapara area of Haluaghat, police said.
According to Additional Superintendent of Police (Administration and Finance) Md Abdullah Al Mamun, the attack followed a motorcycle search conducted at around 1:00am.
During the search, Liyon allegedly verbally abused and threatened police personnel.
Later, when police officers, including Constable Izaul Haque Bhuiya, went to Ruhul Amin’s residence to inform him about the incident, Liyon reportedly became aggressive and reportedly attacked the officers with a sharp weapon.
He targeted Constable Bhuiya, striking him on the back.
Police rushed the injured constable to Haluaghat Upazila Health Complex. Doctors later referred him to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital as his condition worsened.
Police also seized the motorcycle used by Liyon. Ruhul Amin was taken to the police station for questioning, as he was allegedly present at the scene during the attack.
On Friday afternoon, Additional Superintendent of Police Abdullah Al Mamun confirmed that Liyon has been arrested for his involvement in the attack.
He added that his father is also being held for further questioning.
Police are preparing a case in connection with the incident.
