On International Women’s Day, Sharmin Sultana Sumi, lead singer of the Chirkutt, shared a heartfelt message on her verified Facebook profile, reflecting on her journey through music, creativity, and life. The singer-songwriter, who hails from Khalishpur, Khulna, spoke candidly about the challenges she has faced, the lessons she has learned and the values that have guided her over more than two decades in the arts.

Sumi, the fourth daughter of the late Maqbul Hossain and Shelly Maqbul of Shailkupa, Jhenaidah, traced her career from her small-town beginnings to becoming a respected figure in Bangladesh’s music scene. Alongside her musical career, she has spent nearly two decades contributing creatively to the advertising industry, demonstrating her versatility and dedication.

In her post, Sumi described how perseverance and humility shaped her path. She acknowledged the mistakes she may have made along the way but emphasised her commitment to moving forward with integrity and compassion. “I have always wanted to be seen as a human being first, rather than defined solely by gender,” she wrote.

The artist reflected on the ways her work has connected with audiences, noting that her songs and messages have become a source of courage and inspiration for many. Despite facing criticism and obstacles, Sumi said she has continued her journey without compromise, focusing on spreading joy and encouraging others to keep moving forward.

She concluded her message by urging others to care for themselves amid life’s pressures, recognising the importance of self-kindness.

On this Women’s Day, Sumi extended her gratitude and best wishes to all women and men who persevere with optimism and dedication, celebrating resilience and shared humanity in challenging times.
