Kolkata actor Srabanti Chatterjee has expressed shock and anger after her personal manager, Arghya Mukhopadhyay, was arrested in connection with a rape case in the Indian state of West Bengal.
According to Indian media reports, police from Howrah’s Chatterjeehat Police Station arrested Arghya from the Shashthitala area on 13 July. He was later produced before a Howrah court, which remanded him to 14 days’ judicial custody. Police have filed the case under multiple non-bailable charges, including rape.
Police said Arghya worked for an event management company and had been assigned through the firm to coordinate Srabanti’s professional engagements as her personal manager.
According to the complaint, the accused allegedly lured a woman known to him to a flat within the Chatterjeehat Police Station area and raped her. Police launched an investigation after receiving a written complaint from the survivor, and later arrested Arghya.
Police sources said the complainant also worked for the same event management company. According to the allegations, she visited Arghya’s residence on 12 April in connection with work, where he allegedly raped her.
The woman filed a written complaint with Chatterjeehat Police Station on 12 June. Police began investigating the allegations and arrested Arghya on Sunday before producing him in court the following day.
Reacting to the allegations, Srabanti said she was shocked and deeply disturbed by the incident.
Speaking to Indian media and later in a statement posted on Instagram, the actor said she had never imagined such an incident could occur. As a woman, she said she hopes the accused receives the maximum punishment if the allegations are proven in court. She also expressed full confidence in the judicial process.
Srabanti said she had known Arghya since 2024 through an event management company called Talentwala, which handled the coordination of her events and day-to-day professional commitments. She clarified that she had not appointed him personally and had no knowledge of his private life or alleged criminal activities.
“I recently came to know that this person is involved in a criminal incident. The news has made me extremely uncomfortable,” she wrote in her Instagram statement.
She added that she had no prior knowledge of Arghya’s personal conduct and made it clear that she would no longer maintain any professional relationship with him. She said she had already informed the concerned event management company of her decision.
The case has triggered widespread discussion on social media. Srabanti reiterated that she has no connection with the allegations against the accused and confirmed that she will not continue any professional association with Arghya in the future.
