Apparently, beans are the latest talk of TikTok town, trending under the name “BeanTok.” The viral movement promotes the idea that consuming up to two cups of beans a day can significantly improve gut health. Some social media users go even further, crediting beans with benefits ranging from better sleep to improved mood and reduced anxiety.
According to science, beans boast high nutritional value. Packed with plant-based protein, carbohydrates, fibre and antioxidants, they support heart health, help regulate blood pressure and aid weight management, while also promoting a healthy gut. Naturally cholesterol-free and rich in essential nutrients, beans may also lower the risk of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes and obesity.
However, excessive consumption can lead to bloating and digestive discomfort. Medical experts therefore advise eating beans in moderation and with variety, alongside other protein sources, to maximise their health benefits. Nutritionists also recommend gradually introducing legumes into the diet.
That said, the trend’s promotion of consuming two full cups of beans a day may be overstated. For most individuals, one to one-and-a-half cups is more than sufficient. And while a healthy gut may support mood, claims that beans directly improve sleep, reduce anxiety or curb cravings could be a stretch.
For South Asian palates, beans have long been a dietary staple, appearing in a wide range of forms. While incorporating beans into daily meals may feel like a new health trend in the West, they have been traditionally valued across the region for generations. Preparation methods such as soaking, sprouting, and fermenting are embedded in the cuisine, playing a major role in enhancing both digestibility and nutrition.
Ultimately, while internet trends can be silly and not always accurate, they do spark curiosity. BeanTok serves as a gentle reminder to eat your beans regularly, but sensibly.
