Spider-Man: Brand New Day has continued its record-breaking box office run, becoming the highest-grossing Hollywood film in India.
According to Collider, The Tom Holland-led Marvel film surpassed Avatar: The Way of Water after its second weekend, adding another major milestone to an already historic theatrical run.
Starring Holland alongside Zendaya, Jon Bernthal, Jacob Batalon and Mark Ruffalo, Brand New Day has dominated the global box office since its release.
It previously set a record for the biggest domestic opening weekend and became the second-fastest film to cross $1 billion worldwide.
The film also earned an impressive $145 million in North America during its second weekend.
That makes it the third-biggest second weekend in box office history, behind Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Avengers: Endgame.
Its performance in India has been equally remarkable.
Just a week after recording the biggest opening for a non-Indian film in the country, Brand New Day has now overtaken Avatar: The Way of Water to claim the title of the highest-grossing Hollywood release in India.
“The response to Spider-Man: Brand New Day has been truly outstanding and reflects the enduring appeal of global event cinema on the big screen,” Gautam Dutta, CEO of revenue and operations at PVR INOX, said.
With the film continuing to break records, attention is already turning to the future of Holland’s Spider-Man.
Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has indicated that Holland will take a break following the film’s global promotional tour.
The actor has also previously revealed that plans for a possible successor to his version of Spider-Man have existed since Spider-Man: No Way Home in 2021.
However, Holland’s future in the franchise remains uncertain.
For now, fans can expect the actor to enjoy some downtime after the massive success of Brand New Day, with Feige saying Holland and Zendaya deserve a “good and restful victory lap”.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day is currently playing in cinemas.
