An eight-year-old girl was killed after being hit by a speeding autorickshaw in the capital’s Rayerbagh area on Wednesday evening, police said.
This marks the second such incident of the day, as mere hours earlier, five-year-old Jannati met the same fate in the capital’s Kamrangirchar area after a rushing autorickshaw ran her over, according to witnesses.
Eight-year-old Sumaiya Nur Takwa was a second-grade student at a school in Siddhirganj, Narayanganj. She was the daughter of Nur Alam Khan.
The accident occurred around 6pm at a place called Pakar Matha in Kadamtali’s Rayerbagh. According to family members, Takwa was visiting her grandmother’s home in the area with her mother and siblings.
The child’s grandmother, Morjina Begum, who lives in the Rayerbagh Bazar area, told reporters at the hospital that Takwa had gone out with her grandmother, mother, and sisters in the afternoon.
After walking a short distance from the grandmother’s house, Takwa asked for money to buy lollipops. “I gave her Tk15 to buy three lollipops for the three sisters,” the grieving grandmother said.
While running towards the shop with the money and attempting to cross the road, a speeding autorickshaw struck the child.
Takwa was thrown from the impact and sustained severe injuries. Locals rushed her to a nearby local hospital. When her condition deteriorated there, she was quickly transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Doctors at DMCH declared her dead around 8pm.
Md Faruk, inspector and in-charge of the Dhaka Medical College Hospital police camp, confirmed the death on behalf of the doctors. He said the body has been kept in the hospital morgue.
No further details about the autorickshaw driver or any arrest were immediately available.
