Sonu Nigam surprised fans by sharing a video of himself singing Mohammed Rafi’s “Suhani Raat Dhal Chuki” while undergoing surgery, reports Gulf News.
The singer posted the clip on Instagram and dedicated the impromptu performance to his surgeon, Dr Nilesh Sathbhai, and the medical team who operated on him.
Nigam described the unexpected moment as the “Joy of Music”.
The video quickly caught attention online, with fellow singers including Shreya Ghoshal and Mika Singh wishing him a speedy recovery.
Ghoshal also praised Nigam’s dedication to music despite being unwell.
Speaking to Hindustan Times after the procedure, Nigam said the performance was completely unplanned.
According to the singer, Dr Sathbhai is an admirer of his music and had been playing his songs during the operation.
When one of the tracks played without vocals, Nigam spontaneously began singing along.
“Singing in the OT just happened organically,” Nigam said.
He revealed that he sang two or three songs for the medical team during the procedure, although the video he shared shows only one of them.
Nigam said the doctors told him they had never had a patient sing to them during an operation.
He added that the experience was enjoyable for him as well because the songs had a personal connection.
The footage was recorded by members of the medical team, who later sent the video to Nigam, allowing him to share the moment with his followers.
The procedure was performed to remove a recurring growth on Nigam’s left ring finger.
The singer said the growth had previously been removed around four months earlier but had returned.
He believes it could be connected to an underlying arthritis condition, although he stressed that this is his own assumption and not a confirmed diagnosis.
Nigam said there is currently no fixed treatment plan, as the growth has returned for a second time.
He and his doctors are therefore taking a wait-and-see approach.
Nigam also revealed that he did not take a break from his professional commitments following the surgery.
Around the time of the procedure, he attended a birthday celebration held for him, performed the following day and appeared two days later at the launch of his song “Chunni”.
The singer has previously spoken about Mohammed Rafi’s influence on his career.
Nigam has described Rafi as his guru and credited his music as a major influence during his formative years as a singer.
For Nigam, even a surgical procedure became an opportunity to reconnect with the music that has shaped his life and career.
