Hollywood is reeling after the deaths of acclaimed filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Reiner, who were found dead at their Los Angeles home on December 14. Police have confirmed the case is being treated as a homicide, with the couple’s son, Nick Reiner, arrested and held on suspicion of murder.
Emergency services were called to the property at around 3:30 pm local time after a request for medical assistance. The Los Angeles Fire Department said first responders discovered the bodies of a 78-year-old man and a 68-year-old woman, who were pronounced dead at the scene. Sources later identified them as Rob and Michele Reiner.
According to multiple media reports citing police sources, the couple died from knife injuries, with accounts suggesting they were stabbed or had their throats slit. Investigators have not released an official cause of death, but have confirmed that the deaths were the result of a violent crime.
Los Angeles Police Chief Jim McDonnell told reporters that Nick Reiner, 32, was taken into custody within hours of the alert and has been booked on murder charges. He remains in custody as the investigation continues. Police have not detailed a possible motive.
Reports indicate that the bodies were discovered by the couple’s daughter, who contacted authorities and told officers that another family member may have been responsible. Police have not commented publicly on that account.
The news has sent shockwaves through the film industry. Reiner was one of Hollywood’s most influential directors, producers and actors, with a career spanning more than five decades. He first became a household name in the 1970s playing Mike “Meathead” Stivic in the landmark CBS sitcom ‘All in the Family’. He later transitioned behind the camera, making his directorial debut with the cult classic ‘This Is Spinal Tap’ in 1984.
Over the following years, Reiner directed a series of beloved and critically acclaimed films, including Stand by Me, The Princess Bride, When Harry Met Sally…, Misery, A Few Good Men and The American President. He received an Academy Award nomination for A Few Good Men, cementing his reputation as a major force in American cinema.
Born in the Bronx in 1947, Reiner was the son of legendary comedian and actor Carl Reiner, who died in 2020, and actress and singer Estelle Lebost. He married Michele Singer Reiner in 1989 after meeting her during the production of ‘When Harry Met Sally’. The couple had three children together. Reiner was previously married to actor and director Penny Marshall, who died in 2018.
Nick Reiner has spoken openly in the past about his struggles with drug addiction. In a 2016 interview, he said his addiction began in his early teens and led to repeated stays in rehabilitation, estrangement from his family and long periods of homelessness across several states.
He later drew on those experiences while working as an associate writer on Being Charlie, a semi-autobiographical film directed by his father. At the time, he said he had returned home and was rebuilding his life with the support of his family.
Police say the investigation is ongoing and have urged the public to avoid speculation as detectives continue to gather evidence and conduct interviews.
