Scientists have captured the most detailed images yet of the Sun’s surface, revealing an exceptionally dynamic and complex landscape.
Using the National Science Foundation’s Daniel K Inouye Solar Telescope on Maui, Hawaii, researchers were able to closely observe the Sun’s intensely hot surface, which cannot be viewed safely with the naked eye without proper eye protection.
The images were initially taken to calibrate and test the telescope’s performance. However, the team soon realized they had recorded the Sun’s bright outer layer with a level of clarity never achieved before.
Among the most striking discoveries were delicate, feather-like patterns spreading across the solar surface.
Solar physicist Ruizhu Chen of Stanford University, who was not involved in the study, said the swirling structures reminded her of the dramatic skies depicted in Vincent van Gogh’s Starry Night.
The researchers identified these patterns as ripples caused by magnetized plasma moving at varying speeds, creating instabilities similar to waves formed when wind blows across water. While this fluid-dynamics phenomenon has been observed on Earth and on planets such as Jupiter and Saturn, study co-author Friedrich Wöger of the National Solar Observatory said that it has never before been seen so clearly on the Sun’s surface.
The research was published on Wednesday in the journal Nature.
Scientists hope these detailed observations will improve their understanding of the Sun’s behavior, particularly the processes behind coronal mass ejections- powerful bursts of solar material that can travel toward Earth. When these eruptions reach our planet, they can generate solar storms capable of disrupting GPS and communication systems while also creating spectacular auroras.
