Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has met Qatari mediators in New York to discuss Tehran’s proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, as a US official said Washington would not agree to end the war unless Iran’s nuclear programme is addressed.
Speaking to Iranian state media on Monday, Araghchi said the Qatari mediators would take the ideas discussed during the meeting to the US, reports Al Jazeera.
He said he expected Washington to give its final response by Tuesday.
“We talked about ideas and how to find solutions to fulfil Iran’s conditions and how to implement those conditions,” he said. “They had some ideas, and we had a discussion that they will also present to the American side.”
Asked whether he would remain in New York while waiting for the US response, Araghchi said he would return to Tehran within hours.
“Whenever the Qataris have a response, they know how to get it to us,” he said.
Araghchi said the discussions were part of an ongoing exchange of messages involving Qatari and Pakistani mediators. He said the process had become “a more serious form” since Iran submitted its proposal.
Tehran announced the plan on Friday at the United Nations General Assembly in New York City. It calls on Washington to release frozen Iranian funds, lift sanctions and end its naval blockade of Iranian ports.
Araghchi said Iran could complete those steps within four or five days, after which the Strait of Hormuz could reopen. He said negotiations on a final agreement, including the issue of Iran’s nuclear programme, could then begin by the seventh day.
US President Donald Trump rejected the proposal on Saturday, describing it as “unacceptable”.
