Mohammad Ayub Mia has resigned as chairman of state-owned Sammilito Islami Bank PLC, stepping down from the board months after the BNP formed the government following its victory in the 13th national parliamentary election.
The former government secretary submitted his resignation on Sunday to the secretary of the Financial Institutions Division under the finance ministry, citing personal reasons.
“I resigned today due to personal reasons,” Ayub Mia said.
“I am getting older and no longer wish to carry such responsibilities. I want to spend the remaining time of my life in a relaxed way.”
His departure comes as the bank faces continuing leadership uncertainty.
The finance ministry issued a gazette notification on February 15 appointing Nabil Mustafizur Rahman as managing director and chief executive officer of the lender.
Rahman later declined to assume the position, citing personal reasons.
Sammilito Islami Bank began operations on December 1, 2025 after five Shariah-based banks were merged under a restructuring plan designed to stabilise struggling lenders.
The merged institutions were Exim Bank, Social Islami Bank, First Security Islami Bank, Global Islami Bank and Union Bank.
Ayub Mia, who is also a member of the board of Ibn Sina Trust, was appointed the bank’s first chairman on December 7 last year.
The consolidated bank has an authorised capital of Tk40,000 crore and paid-up capital of Tk35,000 crore.
The government injected Tk20,000 crore into the lender, while Tk15,000 crore came from shares held by depositors of the merged banks.
