Salman Khan’s upcoming war drama Battle of Galwan has been renamed Maatrubhumi, with the actor unveiling the new title through a fresh poster shared on social media on Monday.
Posting the new artwork, Salman wrote, “May War Rest In Peace,” along with the hashtag #Maatrubhumi. He also tagged the film’s director Apoorva Lakhia, co-actor Chitrangda Singh and his production banner, Salman Khan Films, which is backing the project.
The poster shows Salman bloodied and injured as he blocks a pole wrapped with barbed wire from striking him, while the new title appears prominently across the image. Notably, the latest promotional material does not mention a release date. Earlier announcements had indicated April 10 as the film’s planned release.
The film’s teaser, released in December, depicted Salman leading his troops in a close combat battle against Chinese forces in Eastern Ladakh. However, the teaser drew criticism from some viewers in India, who pointed out that a scene featuring Salman holding a barbed-wire weapon while facing enemy troops resembled Jon Snow’s stand in the Game of Thrones episode “Battle of the Bastards”.
Salman later addressed criticism of his restrained expression in the teaser, explaining that his character is an Indian Army colonel and that an exaggerated reaction would not suit the role.
The sudden announcement of the new title, without further explanation, left some fans puzzled online. Several questioned whether the film had indeed been officially renamed.
Inspired by the 2020 Galwan Valley clash between Indian and Chinese forces, the project had already sparked controversy earlier this month. China’s state-backed media outlet Global Times claimed the film “distorts facts” and promotes anti-China sentiment.
Produced by Salma Khan under the banner of Salman Khan Films and directed by Apoorva Lakhia, Maatrubhumi stars Salman as an Indian Army colonel leading his men against a larger Chinese force. The makers say the film aims to portray courage, sacrifice and resilience while also exploring themes of love and family.
