Chief Election Commissioner of Rajshahi University Central Students’ Union (RUCSU) Professor F. Nazrul Islam has dismissed rumours that the upcoming election may be postponed, calling them unfounded.
Speaking to reporters on Sunday night, he said, “The speculation over deferring the RUCSU election is baseless. The Election Commission has not taken any such decision. If the situation remains normal, the election will be held on September 25 as scheduled.”
The assurance comes as the university continues to witness counter programmes over the “ward quota” admission privileges for students of teachers and officials. The authorities have also decided to keep all classes and examinations suspended.
Earlier on 13th September, students confined Pro-Vice Chancellor Prof Main Uddin, the Registrar, Proctor Prof Mahbubur Rahman, and Public Relations Officer and administrator Prof Akhtar Hossain Majumdar inside their offices in protest at the quota system. The standoff later turned violent, leaving the pro-VC, deputy registrar, and several students and teachers injured.
In the early hours of the following day, under pressure from the protests, the university administration suspended the quota-based admission process. Sunday’s syndicate meeting reaffirmed that decision.
The RUCSU election is scheduled for September 25, with voting to take place at 990 booths across 17 centres in nine academic buildings. Ballot counting will be held at Kazi Nazrul Islam Auditorium, with the entire process projected live on a large screen outside.
