Portugal has officially extended diplomatic recognition to Palestine, Foreign Minister Paulo Rangel declared on Sunday in New York.
Speaking at Portugal’s permanent mission to the United Nations, Rangel described the step as “a long-standing principle of Portuguese foreign policy now brought to fruition.”
He underscored that a two-state solution remains the “only viable road” to achieving a durable peace in the Middle East, urging an immediate ceasefire, reports Reuters.
Rangel stressed that Hamas must not retain any authority in Gaza or elsewhere, while calling for the unconditional release of all hostages.
The minister further noted that recognition alone “cannot undo the humanitarian tragedy unfolding in Gaza.” He condemned the widespread hunger, devastation, and the continued expansion of Israeli settlements across the West Bank.
Lisbon announced its decision in alignment with Britain, Canada and Australia, which also moved to recognise Palestine
