Sony has launched its FX5 Cinema Line camera in Bangladesh at Tk6.2 lakh, targeting photographers, filmmakers and media professionals seeking cinema-grade image quality in a compact body.

The full-frame camera was unveiled Friday at the InterContinental Dhaka under the theme “Lighting the Way Forward”, bringing Sony’s latest Cinema Line technology to Bangladesh.

The FX5 uses a newly developed, fully stacked Exmor RS CMOS image sensor and Sony’s BIONZ XR2 processing engine. It delivers more than 15 stops of dynamic range in S-Log3 shooting and offers three base ISO settings of 800, 4,000 and 12,800.

A Dual Gain Shooting mode, introduced to the FX series with the FX5, is designed to expand shooting latitude while reducing noise in shadow areas.

The camera also introduces Open Gate shooting to the FX series, using the sensor’s full 3:2 area. It supports internal recording in Sony’s 16-bit X-OCN RAW format, with new X-OCN C1 and C2 codecs designed to reduce file sizes and speed up post-production.

The FX5 can record 5K video at up to 60 frames per second, 4K at up to 120 frames per second and Full HD at up to 240 frames per second.

Its autofocus uses artificial intelligence-based human pose estimation to track a subject’s eyes, head and body. Its Auto Tracing White Balance system combines visible-light and infrared sensors with deep-learning scene analysis.

The camera has five-axis in-body image stabilisation, with a roll-correction range roughly twice that of the previous model, along with a 3.5-inch, approximately 2.76-million-dot, four-axis articulating touchscreen and a new menu system shared with Sony’s CineAlta line.

Sony also introduced two accessories with the camera: the detachable DVF-EL1 OLED viewfinder, with approximately 7.07 million dots and a 0.58-type panel, and the XLR-H2 handle unit, which supports in-camera audio recording at up to 96kHz, 32-bit float across four channels.

Cinematographer Claudio Miranda, known for his work on Top Gun: Maverick and F1: The Movie, said the FX5 combines high image quality with mobility in a compact body suited to a wide range of shooting environments.

Director Gareth Edwards, who used the camera on a project spanning Cambodia, Thailand and Nepal, described it as a run-and-gun cinema camera designed for demanding, fast-moving productions.

In Bangladesh, the FX5 comes with an 18-month warranty serviced through Sony Singapore. Buyers can contact Sony’s authorised retail partners in Bangladesh for availability and purchase details.

Sony’s Cinema Line has gained traction among cinematographers and independent filmmakers by combining professional-grade image quality with compact bodies suited to documentary, news and independent film production.
