The government is working to prevent the misuse of artificial intelligence (AI) in creating fake and harmful content and is developing a framework in coordination with social media platforms, Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology Minister Faqir Mahbub Anam said.
He made the remarks as the chief guest at the ‘Centenary Successful Persons Memorial Honour and Publication and Reception-2026’ programme held at Osman Jamal Auditorium of the Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Dhaka, on Friday.
Faqir Mahbub Anam said excessive use of mobile phones and social media was reducing reading habits among the younger generation, while the spread of harmful and inappropriate content on digital platforms was affecting children and adolescents.
He said the government was discussing the issue with relevant stakeholders of social media platforms and working to take necessary measures to address the challenges.
The minister also expressed concern over the misuse of artificial intelligence to create fake and harmful content. He said the Information and Communication Technology Division was working to prevent such misuse and develop an effective framework through coordination with social media platforms.
Speaking at the event, Faqir Mahbub Anam said people who have made important contributions to society and the country should be recognised beyond religion, politics and identity and their achievements should be presented to the younger generation.
He said preserving the history and contributions of distinguished individuals would encourage young people to engage in social activities.
Highlighting the contributions of eminent people from Tangail, the minister said many individuals had played important roles in education, healthcare, social service and public welfare.
He called for preserving their work through publications and making those materials available in libraries so that future generations could learn from their contributions.
The minister congratulated the award recipients and said recognition of people who contribute to society through creativity and dedication would encourage others to engage in positive work.
The programme featured the unveiling of eight books and honoured distinguished individuals for their contributions. The organisers said the initiative aimed to preserve the lives, work and achievements of successful personalities and promote positive thinking.
The event was chaired by Chhayanir President Yusuf Khan. Special guests included Tangail-8 (Kalihati) lawmaker Md Lutfar Rahman Matin and Chhayanir adviser Abdul Kashem Chowdhury.
Chhayanir Administrative Director Shaikh Anaze Rahman, Executive Director Md Lutfar Rahman, writers, cultural activists and invited guests from different professions also attended the programme.
