Selena Gomez has revealed that heavy nicotine vaping changed her voice and urged fans to avoid the habit. The singer, actor and Rare Beauty founder, 34, said she has quit vaping but continues to find giving up nicotine difficult.

Variety reported that Gomez shared the admission in a roughly one-minute video on her Instagram Story on Sunday, 18 October. She said the habit had affected her voice and warned people who vape or are considering starting that the experience was not worth it.

“I’m not going to be able to change my voice,” Gomez said. “I vaped nicotine a lot. Nicotine is so hard to quit, and I think I just wanted to say, if you’re going through it, or if you’re even trying to vape, it’s just not worth it. It’s so stupid, and it’s changed my voice.”

Gomez also addressed fans who dislike how her voice sounds now. She said she understood their reaction and would not mind if they chose not to listen to her.

The singer said she was glad to have stopped vaping and hoped she could maintain that decision, although quitting had been difficult. She also offered encouragement to others struggling with the habit.

“But I know if you are going through something, you can get through it too,” she said. “It sucks.”

Gomez had previously addressed questions about her changing voice during an Instagram Live session last December. At the time, she did not mention vaping. Instead, she said her throat sometimes swelled internally.

The singer has spoken openly about her health over the years. She lives with lupus and received a kidney transplant in 2017. She has also discussed her bipolar disorder diagnosis, including in the 2022 documentary Selena Gomez: My Mind & Me.

Gomez stars in and executive produces the Hulu comedy series Only Murders in the Building alongside Steve Martin and Martin Short. The sixth season is scheduled to return on 8 December, with the story moving to London under the title Only Murders in London.

She launched her cosmetics brand, Rare Beauty, in 2020.
