Filmmaker Karan Johar is expanding his popular ‘Student of the Year’ franchise with a darker new chapter, announcing the web series ‘Student of the Year: After Dark’ as the original film completes 14 years, writes Hindustan Times.
Johar unveiled the project on social media, sharing a first-look poster featuring Shanaya Kapoor in a striking, blood-stained appearance. The image signals a departure from the glamorous campus drama that defined the franchise’s earlier instalments.
The series will stream on JioHotstar, according to the announcement. Further details about its storyline, cast and release date have yet to be revealed.
The original ‘Student of the Year’, released in 2012, marked the acting debuts of Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan and Sidharth Malhotra. Directed by Johar, the film followed a group of students navigating rivalry, romance and ambition at an elite school.
The franchise continued with ‘Student of the Year 2’ in 2019, starring Tiger Shroff alongside debutants Tara Sutaria and Ananya Panday.
The new series appears poised to give the familiar world a different tone, with the title and first-look image hinting at a more intense take on student life. However, the makers have not yet disclosed how the series will connect with the earlier films or whether familiar characters will return.
